Avignon to 15 minutes
Called “City of the Popes”, Avignon keeps the indelible trace of the life of the Popes in this city which was considered at that time as the capital of the medieval West. Our guest room is ideally placed for visiting the Palais des Papes, which you can reach in 20 minutes. Avignon is in the heart of Provence, it is also a cultural place impossible to circumvent with its Festival of Theater, the biggest in Europe. It lasts 3 weeks in July. The song “Sur le pont d’Avignon”, so popular, has made the site famous all over the world. Festival of Avignon 2015 from 3 to 26 July. The program of the 68th Festival d’Avignon is now available on www.festival-avignon.com/
Châteauneuf du pape (to 10 minutes)
This village is located between Avignon and Orange. A castle overlooks the village with the plain of Comtat below and its vines as far as the eye can see. 15 minutes from our guest house, you will pass from domain to domain to taste this wine of appellation “Châteauneuf du Pape”. Our favorite restaurant: the Orchard of the Popes for its provencal cuisine and its sublime view.
Baux-de-Provence (to 45 minutes)
Les Baux de Provence is located 15 minutes from Saint Rémy de Provence, in the middle of the Alpilles in the garrigue. The views are extraordinary, the light is unique (it is not for nothing that Van Gogh and Cezanne loved to paint these landscapes). You are very close to Arles and the Camargue. This stone village, suspended from a hill, is one of the most visited sites of Provence. We advise you to discover it early in the morning or at the end of the day for a better light and with fewer people. Do not hesitate to take a walk in the triangle Baux de Provence / Saint Remy de Provence / Maussanne les Alpilles. On Wednesday, it is the day of the big market of Saint Remy de Provence, very nice in low season. In the heart of the Alpilles, the superb Careers of Lights present unique multimedia shows in the world.
Uzès (to 30 minutes)
Our favorite. It is our favorite village for its lifestyle, the restoration of these houses, the quality of decoration shops, fabrics or clothing. We spend a day without seeing the time pass. Uzès is the first Duchy of France, the whole village dates from the Renaissance with superb stone facades, gardens and cobbled alleys. Saturday is market day, one of the biggest in Provence. Uzès is in the Gard, 30 minutes from the house. We go by a superb road that adds a little pleasure in the discovery of the place. Favorite restaurant: Le Terroir for these Provençal tapas and its location on the Place aux Herbes
Pont du Gard (to 25 minutes)
Set in an impressive natural site, the Pont du Gard challenges each visitor by its size and its conservation. Two thousand years after its construction, this Roman aqueduct is still unique in Europe for its beauty and technology. It crosses the Gardon, it allowed to lead the water from Uzès to Nîmes. The Pont du Gard is listed as a World Heritage Site. It is the second most visited monument in the province.
To do absolutely: the spectacle sound and light Les Féeries du Pont special anniversary 5 – 6 – 12 and 13 June 2015 Festival “Lives to the bridge” 9 and 10 July 2015 Association of video projections, flaming games with a staging which makes us dream in an exceptional setting. Isle sur la Sorgue (to 50 minutes)
L’Isle sur la Sorgue is THE place of the flea market in Provence. Located at the gates of the Luberon, it attracts all the chinaurs of France and of elsewhere. This village has more than 300 antique dealers. A large market is held on Sundays with an outdoor flea market in addition. The village is crossed by the Sorgue and allows to enjoy beautiful terraces at the water’s edge. You will enjoy strolling along the canals that wind through the narrow streets. You will cross small bridges and discover the great wheels dragged by the power of the river water.
Camargue (to 45 minutes)
and of marshes, rice fields, flamingos, bulls and horses. The Camargue is unique but diversified by its landscapes. You can visit the Saintes Marie de la Mer Ornithological Park (we love it), take a horseback ride in the middle of the marshes, on the beach or simply enjoy a moment of relaxation at the Espiguette, our favorite beach, immense and wild. Do not forget the visit of Aigues Mortes, a very beautiful fortified village. Note that the Camargue loses much of its charm in July / August. Try to enjoy it in the off-season.
Arles (to 45 minutes)
Arles is a friendly town that opens the doors of the Camargue. It combines some superb antique monuments, such as the arena, the Alyscomps and the thermal baths of Constantine. Arles is the cradle of bullfights, férias or Camargue races. It also houses every year the international meetings of the photography, moment impossible to circumvent for all those who like the picture. In 2015, from July 6 to September 20.
Calanques de Cassis (to 1h30)
These calanques remind me of the Corsican coast, turquoise water, steep cliffs and lovely coves where you can swim. These cliffs extend 20 km from Marseille to Cassis. Cape Canaille is considered one of the most beautiful cliffs in Europe. You can choose to discover them by boat from Casiss or by walk on a marked trail. Cassis is a charming seaside village. It is a small port with undeniable charm. You will enjoy lunch but watch out in July-August or on weekends, it’s overloaded and park there is a course of the fighter. Like the boat ride that loses its charm with the crowd.
Luberon (to 45 minutes)
The Luberon is a wonderful excuse to visit from our guest house. It is the Provence that we love with its fields of lavender, its small villages perched like Gordes or Lourmarin and its hills of Ocher (Roussillon) which cut with large forests as far as the eye can see. We will advise you on the villages not to be missed and the walks to be done.
